Ya know, I used to be a damn good reader. I could read at least a novel a week, if not more, and have time to start another one. I used to go through books so fast that I never returned books late to the library since I would immmediatly want more to read. I would read several books at once, bouncing from one genre to the other, and never getting mixed up. I miss those days.
Lately, my level of reading has diminished severly. True, I don't have nearly as much time as I did back in the days of yore, but I do have some free time. Most of it is spent with friends, going out, or reading comic books. But a good chunk of it is spent on video games, surfing the 'net, and, well, reading comic books. Not to dis those other hobbies o' mine, but I miss reading. Reading non-comic book that is. I love my comic books but....
So now, I'm setting up a challenge for myself. There are 4 books that I've been reading off and on again for months now, but have not finished. I am really into the books, but I just haven't had the...time? movtivation? I dunno, to finish them. I want to finish those four by the end of the month. 3 of them I'm half way done, the other one is just sitting on my shelf. I feel that if I can finish these books, books I'm enjoying, I can slowly make my way back to being the reader I once was. True, I doubt I'll be able to do the one novel a week thing. But maybe a novel a month? No, that doesn't sound right either. A novel every two weeks? Something better to strive for. I work in a frickin library, people! I work at a bookstore! Books should be running through me veins and making my skin all bumpy and distorted! And I have shelves....SHELVES I SAY...of books that I thought might be interesting (again with the working at a bookstore...dangerous considering the discount they give me) and wanted to read...but I would (forgive the pun) shelve them until I had time later on. The books mock me with their spines faceing out at me, luring me to pick them up, but fighting for my attention with the other books pressed up against them. I must heed their calls and entertain my imagination in ways that video games and myspace cannot even begin to fathom. I shall conquer those shelves...read to my heart's desire...and then go out and buy more. MORE I SAY! Or you know...check them out of my local library. Whichever works.
